HF researcher argues disclosing pretraining efficiency gains leaks no core IP

Hugging Face researcher Elie Bakouch weighs into the debate over how much frontier labs like Anthropic should disclose about their models. He argues there's a spectrum between full secrecy and disclosure: revealing pretraining efficiency gains over previous architectures—without exposing datasets or exact learning algorithms—wouldn't meaningfully accelerate competitors. On the concern of helping Chinese labs, he contends compute is the real bottleneck, so such disclosures wouldn't give OpenAI, Google, or Meta any edge either. He sees value in releasing this info for public understanding, while acknowledging the tradeoff is debatable.
