Google clarifies K-12 policy: schools can keep Search but must opt in to AI
Ars Technica AI · rss · 2026-11-06
After backlash from educators and parents over reports that Google would 'turn off search' for K-12 schools rejecting AI, Google clarified its new policy: schools using Google apps must opt in to its AI portfolio — Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Search, which Google counts as part of its AI offerings. Schools decide based on their own AI policies rather than Google forcing it off. Ars Technica notes the approach may not be altruistic but technically gives schools more choice and control than before.
