Shopify vs Stripe diverge on agentic payments: whose credential does the agent hold?
schwentker · x · 2026-11-06
Shopify and Stripe are taking different approaches to agentic network tokens in agentic commerce, diverging on whose credential the agent holds.
- Stripe: the agent gets a Stripe credential — a Shared Payment Token (possibly wrapping a Visa/Mastercard agentic token) or a single-use virtual card — so Stripe sits in the middle of every agent purchase. Card networks struggle to tie purchases back to end users, and users hit disputes/returns friction when a different credential is injected (e.g., Muse + Stripe Link replacing an Amex at Best Buy).
- Shopify: similarly expanding to consumers via Shop Pay, mirroring Stripe's Link.
Both command huge merchant bases and consumer wallets, making credential ownership a central battleground for agentic commerce.
