GitHub Octoverse 2026: agents are reshaping developer behavior
GitHub released its annual Octoverse report, amplified by vLLM, which announced it ranks #2 among the most-engaged community open-source repositories and #8 on the fastest-growing list by contributors. The vLLM team thanked everyone who filed issues, reviewed PRs, and added model or hardware support.
Key findings from the report:
- Developers pushed code to GitHub 17.9 billion times in the past 12 months — more than 2024 and 2025 combined
- Activity bent sharply upward mid-year as agents went from experiments to collaborators
- New repos with an agent configuration file averaged 8x as many commits as those without
- As of September, over 40% of pull requests are started by an agent
- Developers chose from more models than ever, with adoption reaching industries highlighted for the first time, from health care to agriculture
The report also spotlights cases like a Nepali flood bulletin on GitHub Pages, NASA JPL spacecraft software, and open-source e-reader firmware.
