Jot: Google engineer's free open-source Mac dictation app powered by Gemini 3.5 Transcribe
bigaiguy · x · 2026-11-05
Google engineer Ammaar Reshi released Jot, a free, Apache-2.0-licensed macOS dictation app built on Gemini 3.5 Transcribe (not an official Google product).
- Hold fn, speak, release — polished text lands at your cursor, punctuated with filler words removed; it handles self-corrections like "meet at 1pm, actually, make it 2pm"
- No account, no middleman server, no analytics; API key stored in macOS Keychain and sent only to Google
- Audio saves to disk from the first millisecond, so crashes cost nothing; dictations queue offline and finish on reconnect
- fn+Space for hands-free recording, a custom dictionary for names and product terms, and optional tone matching for email, chat, and code
