Malaysia's deep AI hardware supply chain: Intel, AMD, Micron and more
davidyin44 · x · 2026-11-05
After visiting Kuala Lumpur with the Asia Society and meeting Malaysian AI policy officials, the author argues Malaysia's hardware footprint is massively underrated: Celestica assembles compute/storage/networking systems in Kulim, Intel has assembly/test ops in Penang and Kulim (since 1972), AMD runs a semiconductor R&D hub in Penang, Infineon makes power semiconductors in Kulim, and Micron has an assembly/test facility in Batu Kawan. With US data center buildout stalled for years, Malaysia's manufacturing base is coming into focus — and some predict it will host both American and Chinese chips, becoming a compute power.
