DeepSeek engineer says it will keep open-sourcing weights to hasten AGI despite safety risks

Speaking at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, DeepSeek engineer Gao Xi said the company remains committed to releasing open model weights to accelerate AGI, even if that raises safety risks — a direct response to US safety concerns and Chinese scrutiny over whether open-source AI poses national security risks.
- Gao framed the race as against the clock, not rival firms: "If AGI is going to arrive in 10 years, I hope we can bring it forward to one year. If one year, I hope it can arrive tomorrow."
- He argued open-source development promotes shared innovation and technical breakthroughs.
- These are rare public remarks from a DeepSeek representative.
