Scientists fuse graphene and glass into glaphene, a 2D semiconductor with new electronic behavior
acmoytoy · x · 2026-11-05
Researchers have created glaphene, an unusual 2D material combining graphene with an ultra-thin layer of silica glass. Surprisingly, the interaction between the two layers produces entirely new electronic behavior, turning the hybrid into a semiconductor with properties neither material has alone. The team says this could open paths for advanced electronics, optical devices, and future quantum technologies. It's still early-stage research, but glaphene demonstrates how atomic-scale material combinations can unlock seemingly impossible properties.
