Pew: Only 3% of Americans Accept AI Diagnosing Alone, 60% Wary of Doctor Using AI

A Pew Research Center survey of 3,488 U.S. adults (conducted June 2026) finds Americans open to AI in healthcare but insistent on human oversight:
- 47% accept AI diagnoses with human review, but only 3% would let AI diagnose alone; 46% reject any AI role in insurance claims
- 60% would feel uncomfortable if their own doctor used AI for diagnoses and treatments — double the 30% who are comfortable
- Receptiveness is highest for AI-assisted translation/administrative tasks and lowest for autonomous decisions
Overall, adults are split on whether AI will improve patient health and pessimistic about its impact on the patient-doctor relationship.
