Quanta: Injecting 'Thoughts' Into LLMs to Test Whether AI Can Introspect
mtizard · x · 2026-11-05
Quanta Magazine covers new research probing whether large language models can introspect.
- Background: Introspection—awareness of one's own thought processes—has long been debated in philosophy and psychology; some tie it to consciousness, others call it an elaborate illusion, and it's notoriously hard to test in the lab.
- New direction: Researchers are now exploring this in LLMs. In 2025, Anthropic researcher Jack Lindsey devised a method to inject "thoughts" directly into a model's neural network—a kind of targeted digital neurosurgery—to test whether models can detect and report their own internal states.
- The experiments aim to map AI's capacity for self-awareness and could inform understanding of model internals and consciousness-adjacent questions.
