Reddit user slams Altman's 'only 5% of RAM used' claim as baseless amid shortage
Turbulent_Proof3900 · reddit · 2026-11-05
A Reddit user pushed back on Sam Altman's recent remark that people with lots of RAM only use 5% of it, calling him out of touch: (1) buyers of spec'd-out machines actually need the memory, (2) OpenAI's own desktop app grabs local resources whenever it can to save on OpenAI's server costs, and (3) the 5% claim has no data behind it. The author adds that if the RAM shortage bothers Altman — partly caused by AI companies' buying — he and Anthropic have the capital to build their own fabs.
