Researcher Pushes Back on RoboColosseum: Scene Breadth Won't Probe Physical Understanding
DJiafei · x · 2026-11-05
A substantive critique of the open robot eval initiative: completing familiar tasks across different environments doesn't show whether a model understands the physical properties of objects. The author argues for systematically varying physical parameters to locate where capabilities break down:
- Can it adjust grip when a same-looking object is heavier or more slippery?
- Adapt when the centre of mass shifts? Treat fragile/deformable objects differently from rigid ones?
- Recognize unexpected resistance and change its approach?
Feedback matters as much as rankings: when a policy fails, engineers need evidence about which conditions caused the failure, not just a leaderboard and a failed rollout.
