Gary Marcus calls out critics for quoting stroke-stricken Chomsky, 95, as if he's active
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-11-05
When someone cited Chomsky's anti-AI remarks in present tense, Gary Marcus publicly corrected them:
- Chomsky (born 1928) suffered a stroke 2.5 years ago and hasn't made a public statement since; he is recovering in a São Paulo hospital, with speech and the right side of his body affected;
- Marcus asked: "do you often attack people who can't defend themselves?";
- He also reiterated his own position: a "non-doomer" who nonetheless believes current AI poses a serious catastrophe risk (not extinction per se) due to its poor ability to reliably follow instructions.
A two-front clash over quoting ethics and AI risk stances.
