The Stacks Project, algebraic geometry's giant reference, is now formalized in Lean
LinusEkenstam · x · 2026-11-05
The Stacks Project—the open-source algebraic geometry textbook—has been systematically formalized in Lean on top of Mathlib, with every completed proof verified by Lean's kernel. Key points:
- Each definition, lemma, proposition and theorem carries the project's stable four-character tag, linking to Lean code and its dependency chain
- Green tags are already in Mathlib; red tags were judged not applicable to Lean
- An interactive dependency graph maps one node per tagged declaration, with treemap/city views for zooming through parts, chapters and sections
- The goal is to review, polish and upstream as much as possible into Mathlib, with community contributions welcome
The effort is a milestone for large-scale formalized mathematics and a notable asset for AI-assisted theorem proving.
