Study benchmarks divergent creativity of LLMs against 100,000 humans in Scientific Reports

Google DeepMind researcher Kory Mathewson highlights his recent work, centered on a Scientific Reports paper (with Yoshua Bengio as co-author) systematically evaluating divergent creativity in LLMs versus a dataset of 100,000 humans.
Using computational creativity measures of semantic divergence — indexing associative thinking across the Divergent Association Task and creative-writing tasks (haiku, story synopses, flash fiction) — the paper benchmarks state-of-the-art LLMs against human performance. It has drawn 37k accesses and 41 citations.
