Solo dev ships 17-language visual novel built largely by Claude: taste beats rules

A solo Japanese developer's visual novel Can Love Save Me? has a free demo on Steam, with Claude doing much of the hands-on work: drafting and revising scenes, translating into 16 languages with review passes, and writing the engine and tools. ChatGPT helped with text and images; ElevenLabs voiced it, Suno scored it. The author acted as director and scenario planner.
What worked
- Giving taste, not rules: explaining why he loves certain VN scenes improved output most
- One translator agent per language, asked to write like a native literary translator, plus a separate review pass
- Small agents that honestly report numbers, instead of one giant run
What he fought against
- "Being sanded down": Claude defaulted to a polite, careful listener; he kept pushing the character back to teasing, openly affectionate
- Explaining the theme; his rule: don't say love is wonderful, show someone loving
- Tests passing ≠ the game looking right: every branch is played through with screenshots he checks himself
