Genhiro Kitagawa, professor emeritus at Japan's Institute of Statistical Mathematics, has received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, in the 2026 autumn honors. The award recognizes his pioneering work in time-series analysis and statistical modeling — state-space models for nonstationary time series, nonlinear/non-Gaussian filtering and smoothing, and new model selection criteria — which greatly expanded the reach of statistical modeling, as well as his leadership as director of ISM and of Japan's National Institute of Informatics umbrella organization.
