Building AI codebase search across hundreds of private repos: one POC architecture
fresh_preserve · reddit · 2026-11-04
A developer shares an architecture for AI-powered codebase Q&A over private GitHub repos, letting engineers ask things like "where is this method called?" and "what are the dependencies between services?"
The POC, hosted on AWS ECS:
- Clones each repo
- Indexes code with codebase-memory, scip-dotnet, scip-typescript, semantic-ts, etc.
- Stores indexed data in PostgreSQL
- Queries via Claude on AWS Bedrock to generate answers
It spans Terraform, TypeScript, C#/.NET, Python and more, with plans to scale from one repo per stack to hundreds across the organization.
The author seeks feedback on: PostgreSQL as the store for indexes/embeddings/relationships, whether SCIP indexing + semantic search is the right combo, existing tools, incremental indexing as repos change, and how to evolve the architecture for scale.
