Google hasn't figured out how to make AI pay like its search engine
The Verge AI · rss · 2026-11-04
Alphabet reported that search queries are growing at their fastest rate in five years, but monetization is lagging: Search revenue growth slowed to 12% year over year in Q3, down from about 17% the prior quarter, while paid clicks growth dropped from 13% to 8%.
That's a concern for a company planning to spend roughly $200 billion this year on infrastructure, largely for AI, without yet finding a way to monetize AI like search. Alphabet shares have fallen about 14% since the earnings report.
