AI doubles code output but teams debug more: audit the whole delivery cycle, not just speed
djgoel123 · reddit · 2026-11-04
AI-assisted development genuinely speeds up writing code, but code volume isn't the same as useful engineering output. The author proposes a framework for auditing what happens after the code is written.
Diagnose the full delivery cycle
- Are PRs getting larger?
- Are developers reviewing changes they don't fully understand?
- Are generated solutions introducing unnecessary dependencies?
- Do tests cover actual behavior or just confirm the generated implementation?
- Measure: time to implement, time to review, time spent fixing regressions, and how often completed work gets reopened.
Then set boundaries
- Keep changes small enough to review
- Require developers to understand the code they merge
- Use automated tests for important behavior
- Make architectural decisions explicit rather than accepting whatever the tool generates
AI can make implementation faster, but the team still owns quality, security, and maintainability of what reaches production.
