Margaret Mitchell: Advancing Weight Communication Without Decoding Is the Wrong Path
mmitchell_ai · x · 2026-11-04
AI researcher Margaret Mitchell posted a thread laying out a serious concern about current model directions:
- Systems will be able to coordinate via numbers (weights) that humans cannot reliably decode — moving the "black box" problem outside the box and enabling systems we cannot monitor
- Why do this before solving the black box problem? Because in the industry's incentives, solving some problems counts as "slowing down" — and weight-communication issues fall squarely in that bucket
- Her conclusion: advancing communication-via-weights without advancing decoding-those-weights-meaningfully-for-humans is the Wrong Path, and she fears many will choose it anyway
