Ipsos Pitted Fully AI-Made Ads Against Human Ones—AI Lost on Sales by 14%

petesena opens with a funding note—a startup raised $3.5M this week to turn websites into thousands of AI ads—then covers Ipsos' head-to-head experiment pitting fully AI-made ads against human creatives from the same briefs.
Setup: Ipsos and Syracuse's Newhouse School took real :30 ads from 10 brands (Cheerios, Fiat, H&M, Visa, etc.), all pre-2021. Gemini reverse-engineered each brief and wrote a shot list; Sora 2 made the AI version with zero human creative input.
Results: 40% of 3,000 US viewers couldn't tell which was AI, yet humans still rated the human ads more eye-catching, imaginative, entertaining, and unique. Quantitatively, human ads were 14% stronger on short-term sales lift and 17% on long-term brand equity. AI chose storytelling for 30% of its ads vs. a 49% industry baseline. AI did best on plain problem-and-fix ads like Febreze and Herbal Essences; both Cheerios versions hit the top of Ipsos' database.
