Claude Code now compacts idle sessions before cache expiry, saving usage on resume
ClaudeDevs · x · 2026-11-04
A detail from Claude Code's October updates: resuming old sessions now costs less.
- Long idle sessions are compacted right before the prompt cache expires (1h), so returning only requires reprocessing the summary instead of the entire conversation
- On Pro and Max plans, resuming a very long conversation now shows a heads-up first if it would consume a big chunk of your 5-hour usage limit
