The Personalization Trap: Where AI Helpfulness Ends and Manipulation Begins
uxmag · x · 2026-11-03
UX Magazine's "Designing the Machine" series (Part 5) by Tushar Deshmukh examines the "personalization trap": the more an AI knows you, the better it can serve you — and, mechanically, the better equipped it is to steer you.
Building on Part 4's argument that AI trust is fragile and hard to rebuild, the piece argues that the line between serving a person's interests and quietly overriding them has become nearly invisible from inside the interface. Its thesis: responsible UX should empower people, not nudge their choices.
