Weil 2.0: an MSO blueprint to rebuild a collapsed law firm as an AI-native platform
jkubicki · x · 2026-11-03
As Weil Gotshal winds down, the author proposes rebuilding it via a PE-backed management service organization (MSO). Three AI-native legal firms are reportedly bidding on Weil assets: Crosby (internal data, trademarks, brand, lawyers), Vetta (precedents, playbooks, KM infrastructure), and Scissero (technology/data, possibly DealVision360). Instead of a fire sale, the blueprint splits the firm into a lawyer-owned PracticeCo and an investor-owned ServiceCo housing tech, IP and AI-enabled legal workflows — modeled on Charlesbank's WSHB MSO investment. The core question: when a great firm loses its rainmakers, can what remains become exponentially valuable in an AI-era legal business model? Includes a full deal-architecture playbook graphic with a five-step roadmap.
