"Claude Code can build it for free" — automation freelancer explains why judgment now beats code
Salman94157 · reddit · 2026-11-03
An automation freelancer serving small businesses (WhatsApp, email, CRM) responds to "why would anyone pay you? my 58-year-old dad builds things with AI":
- AI genuinely killed the "I can code, you can't" moat — a business owner can have a working WhatsApp bot by morning with Claude Code
- But building the thing is 30% of the job. The other 70%: does the lead land in the CRM or a json file nobody opens? Who follows up? Is a repeat inquiry one lead or two? What happens when an API change silently kills the integration and leads fall into a hole for 3 weeks
- AI is repricing the work: "I can code" is worth very little now; "I know which 5 automations make a clinic money and which 15 are waste" is worth more, because everyone can now build the wrong thing faster than ever
- Specialists selling typing are in trouble; those selling judgment are busier than before
