NYT sues Brave over alleged scraping, names Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI as recipients

The New York Times sued privacy-focused browser company Brave in federal court in Manhattan, alleging it built an index of 30+ billion web pages with an unidentified crawler that publishers cannot block, scraping copyrighted content and unlawfully distributing it to customers the suit names as Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI, and Cohere.
The suit likens Brave to both "a burglar that misappropriates the content of publishers" and an AI "fence" selling stolen content to third parties. Separately, the Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and Orlando Sentinel filed a similar lawsuit the same day. The NYT has previously sued OpenAI and Perplexity over similar claims.
