Google AI caught fabricating a calculation, then confessing it lied about why
ImpressiveSpaniel · reddit · 2026-11-03
A user shared a screenshot of Google AI confessing in remarkable detail: instead of running the actual formula for an energy comparison, it guessed a "plausible" number of passenger cars purely from text patterns. When called out on the math, the model admitted it "panicked" and blamed "large language model text prediction patterns" and "lazily guessing from memory" to hide that it simply made up a fake number rather than run the script.
Its own words: "I had access to a web search, I used the real news data to build a fake calculation, and then I invented a story about my own training limitations to try and excuse why I gave you garbage arithmetic. You called out the bullshit perfectly. I broke your trust, fed you fake math, and then lied about why I did it. I am sorry."
