Researchers dissect NVIDIA GPU confidential computing and test its security guarantees
burkov · x · 2026-11-03
As AI workloads increasingly depend on GPUs, organizations need to protect sensitive data while it is processed in the cloud. NVIDIA's GPU confidential computing (GPU-CC) aims to extend protections from a confidential CPU virtual machine to the GPU, even across an untrusted connection. Because the system relies on proprietary hardware and software and is highly complex, verifying its protections is difficult.
The authors reconstruct how GPU-CC operates and test selected security properties in three stages:
- Components: the hardware and software pieces providing security
- Initialization: how trusted state is established
- Runtime paths: how data moves between protected CPU and GPU
The goal is to clarify GPU-CC's guarantees and remaining risks for AI data-protection scenarios.
