SJTU-led paper proposes 'Avatar Intelligence' and an Agentic Oversight Index for personal agents
SJTU · hf · 2026-11-03
A position paper from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, NUS, and Shanghai University (Nov 2, 2026) argues personal AI agents should be measured by how well they amplify human agency, not raw task capability:
- Paradigm: 'Avatar Intelligence' — persistent personal agents that represent users' goals, values, and constraints through sustained decision delegation across contexts and time;
- Maturity roadmap: progressing from human-directed execution to autonomous operation within delegated domains;
- Evaluation: introduces the Agentic Oversight Index (AOI), weighing delivered value against agent-side operational cost and human oversight burden;
- Three core research challenges: identity-continuous personalization across tasks, user-situated evolution via Rehearsal Engineering, and safety mechanisms combining technical control with accountability and recourse.
The paper frames a full research agenda for reliable, long-term decision delegation to personal agents.
