Karpathy vibe-codes HackerTube, a calmer YouTube alternative, in a weekend with Claude Code

Karpathy built HackerTube because he was unhappy with existing products: no login, local-only state, thumbnails auto-grabbed from mid-video instead of clickbait A/B-tested covers. He used Claude Code on Mac with Opus at Medium effort, manually handling only the Google Cloud API, VPS and domain while Claude updated the system, hardened security and deployed the code — a weeks-long project compressed into a weekend. He also open-sourced the underlying comment-analysis data as a ZIP so anyone can hand it to Claude and build their own version.
