Apple Intelligence lands in China in December, powered by Alibaba's Qwen instead of ChatGPT

Apple confirmed on Oct 31 that Apple Intelligence will reach mainland China iPhones in December with iOS 27.3, with developer beta testing starting Nov 4. The key swap: Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence in China will call Alibaba's Qwen for text/image understanding and generation instead of ChatGPT.
Alibaba says user requests and outputs won't be used for model training by default, with opt-in participation. Eligibility covers iPhone 15 Pro and later (plus iPhone Air and iPhone Duo) for China-purchased devices or devices with China location and Apple Account region. It's a partial launch — the next-gen Siri AI announced at WWDC 2026 isn't included. The poster asks whether region-specific model swaps will become the template for AI features in regulated markets.
