Obsidian dev open-sources Pele, a Mermaid-compatible renderer 100-500x faster than mermaid.js
Teknium · x · 2026-11-03
Obsidian creator kepano released Pele, an open-source (MIT) rendering library for diagrams and charts that is compatible with the latest Mermaid syntax.
- 100-500x faster than mermaid.js, 6x smaller bundle, zero dependencies
- Easy theming and responsive to device width
- Motivation: Mermaid was too big, slow, and hard to theme for Obsidian's speed and design goals
- Pele ships as the new renderer in the next Obsidian version, but is usable now via a playground
Teknium also relayed that Mermaid diagrams in Hermes desktop are now 9x faster thanks to Pele plus a few internal optimizations.
