MIT Energy Initiative conference puts AI data center power demand front and center
MIT News AI · rss · 2026-11-03
At MITEI's annual conference (Sept 22-23, 200+ attendees), AI data center energy demand emerged as the central challenge of the energy transition. Highlights: Three Mile Island Unit 1 restart set for mid-2027, EDF modernizing France's 57-reactor fleet, carbon utilization research (structural carbon, energy-storing concrete), startups like Adaion (AI grid optimization) and Raptor Maps (drone solar inspection), and quantum sensing applications. MITEI's Deepjyoti Deka framed the core test: whether AI can cut energy use and boost efficiency faster than its own consumption grows.
