Solo dev builds nationwide 3D camper map with 15k bridges modeled to spec
tomjohndesign · x · 2026-11-03
Designer tomjohndesign shared the backend behind his 3D navigation project for campers: a system that manages, generates, and updates nationwide road data — roughly 15,000 bridges plus many tunnels, trucks, and campers, each modeled to spec with correct power, length, turning radius, load, weight, and bed length (admitting the source data is highly inaccurate).
He explained why satellite imagery won't be the primary visualization:
- Performance: batch-downloading imagery is heavy, coverage varies, and high-res endpoints are expensive — kept only as fallback;
- Flat images on contoured maps create bizarre artifacts around bridges and rivers.
His takeaway: generating an entire country with accurate lane data turns out to be far harder than "show my camper on a 3D map."
