OpenAI pitches data center power plants as a way to protect nearby areas
The Verge AI · rss · 2026-11-03
OpenAI announced its "Grid Protectors Program," piloted at a planned data center in Effingham County, Georgia, promising to free up to 1,000 MW during extreme weather or emergencies—enough to power ACs for 700,000 homes. The PR effort comes as US opposition to data centers spreads over projects built with little local input, like one in Utah's Box Elder County expected to consume more than double the local usage.
