Three UC Santa Barbara ECE projects won seed funding from the campus Institute for Energy Efficiency: energy-proportional AI, room-temperature quantum light sources, and probabilistic computing hardware. Director Steven DenBaars said the grants let researchers test high-risk, high-impact ideas early across the 2026-27 Research Seed, Software Impact, Gauthier Quantum and Photonics Seed programs, laying groundwork for larger investment.
