US court dismisses air purifier maker's defamation suit against Elsevier

A US judge has dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by air purifier company Global Plasma Solutions against publisher Elsevier. The company objected to a 2021 paper by Illinois Institute of Technology researchers who tested one of its devices and found it did little to remove airborne particles, alleging the researchers concealed contradictory data and that the paper survived a failed peer review. On October 22, a judge in North Carolina ruled there was insufficient evidence that Elsevier knowingly published false information or recklessly disregarded the truth, as required for defamation — a ruling seen as a defense of academic freedom.
