The ACM marks the birthday of George Boole (born 1815), founder of Boolean logic. In 1854 he published An Investigation of the Laws of Thought, an algebraic system expressing logic via AND, OR and NOT on true/false values. Some 80 years later, Claude Shannon showed Boolean algebra could describe switching circuits, linking it to computer hardware; it remains foundational to digital circuits and processors today.
