UBS: Musk's Terafab rethinks fabs — wafers spend only ~25% of cycle time processing
BenBajarin · x · 2026-11-02
Ben Bajarin points to UBS analysis of Elon Musk's Terafab push to rethink semiconductor manufacturing:
- Only 25% of a wafer's cycle time is spent on active processing; 75% goes to storage, buffers, and AMHS systems, and process tools occupy just 40% of fab space.
- Terafab's answer is a fundamental rethinking of cleanrooms, tools, and process flows: workflow clusters bring process tools closer, treating wafers like trains through stations — moving through an interconnected vacuum environment and stopping at chambers for processing, rather than being shuttled between robots, EFEMs, and buffers.
- SPCX also aims to compress the timeline from groundbreaking to first silicon.
