GitHub Agentic Workflows goes GA: Markdown in, GitHub Actions out, agents start read-only
AIFlow_ML · x · 2026-11-02
GitHub made Agentic Workflows generally available on Oct 28, an open-source project from GitHub Next that runs agents directly in your CI.
How it works: a workflow is a single Markdown file — YAML frontmatter defines when it runs (on), what it can access (permissions), and which tools the agent gets (tools); the rest is a plain-English task like "triage new issues and label them." gh aw compile turns that file into a GitHub Actions workflow.
Safety by default: agents start read-only. The author, who builds automations for a living, argues the hard part is never "can the agent do it" but "what is it allowed to do when nobody is watching," and shares a checklist to run through before letting an agent touch a real repo — limit permissions, constrain write scope, and roll out gradually.
