$45,841 paper P&L hides the truth: why a status tool's summary can mislead your AI agent
QuanTradin · reddit · 2026-11-02
The author ran a paper-trading options strategy (buying daily calls on laggards within correlated US stock groups): 282 trades from Aug 25–Oct 30, 27.7% win rate, +$45,841.23 realized, best streak 6. But nearly all profit came from three weeks in September, with the curve drifting down weekly since — a dozen trades carry the whole number.
MCP design point: if a status tool hands an agent only the total, the agent concludes the bot works; if it hands the weekly curve, the agent wants to "fix" a rule that may just be between bursts. Neither is right. His proposal (not built, unsettled): return the total, the profit share of the best 10 trades, and the date of the last new high, forcing the agent to discuss concentration before edits. He also argues session-level policy, not per-tool permissions, should slow down edits to a running rule based on one noisy week.
Also promotes Quantradin, his free platform that grades AI-proposed trading rules (Claude/Gemini/ChatGPT/Codex) on closed bars with bid/ask fills, survivors running as paper bots.
