ChatGPT goes token-metered in December: why one giant chat per project is the first habit to drop

OpenAI's help page says that from December, Plus/Pro/Business usage will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex and measured in tokens; Instant won't draw from the allowance. OpenAI claims most users won't see more frequent resets.
The open question: how long-chat history is counted. If context tokens billed per message, message 300 in a giant chat costs far more than message 3 in a fresh one. Google explicitly says long Gemini chats burn more quota, and Anthropic advises fresh chats per topic.
Author's pre-December checklist:
- New chat when the task changes; paste a fixed prompt asking for a <300-word handoff (goal, decisions and why, rejected options, key numbers, next step)
- Use Instant for lookups and small rewrites — the only option that doesn't touch the allowance
- Don't re-ask; searching old chats costs no tokens
- Watch Settings > Usage; Codex coding shares the same pool
Author also plugs his extension AI Toolbox (context-fullness gauge, old-chat search).
