Google energy exec: space data centers cost up to 100x more than Earth-based ones

Google's head of data center energy told The Information that putting an AI data center in space currently costs up to 100x more than running one on Earth, pouring cold water on Sundar Pichai's Project Suncatcher moonshot.
Key points:
- US grid power supply is adequate for AI build-out; slow permits are the real bottleneck
- Launch costs would need to fall to roughly $200/kg by the mid-2030s for orbital compute to compete with ground-based facilities (Ramez Zanki adds that $100–200/kg aligns with other modeling, and Starship could reach that if it achieves high launch cadence)
