Startup-founder density ranking skewed: OpenAI underrated, Yahoo inflated, says analysis
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-11-02
The founder-'incubator' ranking only counts institutions with 25+ founders and 1,000+ current staff, requiring top-fund seed rounds or Series A+. OpenAI labs are underrated due to low attrition, Yahoo's density is inflated by its small headcount, schools cycle personnel every four years, and exited/IPO'd alumni aren't counted. Ex-Yahoo engineering lead Tim Trefren notes Slack and WhatsApp should count as Yahoo alumni. Near-misses: Scale AI (#18), Citadel (#19), Waymo (#21), plus Jane Street, Robinhood, Caltech, Cruise.
