AMD pours engineering and compute into vLLM to route around NVIDIA's CUDA moat
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-11-02
AMD is pouring engineering and compute resources into vLLM in an effort to get around NVIDIA's CUDA moat. An accompanying chart shows vLLM's unusually broad backing: a16z, Sequoia, Dropbox and others fund it, while AMD, NVIDIA, AWS, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud and IBM supply compute.
The core argument: the whole ecosystem benefits, but returns are asymmetric. With a nascent software stack, AMD gains far more from hardware-agnostic inference — it doesn't need to own the software layer, as long as inference software becomes commoditized and standardized, its hardware becomes more competitive.
