Postgres 19 delayed for the first time in a decade — and core contributor says LLMs are why
ccerrato147 · x · 2026-11-02
PostgreSQL major contributor and Databricks staff engineer Robert Haas explains why Postgres 19 will miss its usual release window for the first time in ten years, slipping to November: LLMs made finding bugs vastly easier.
- Several large features were reverted late in beta (Aug 27–Sep 15): UPDATE/DELETE FOR PORTION OF, SQL Property Graph Queries (SQL/PGQ), and ALTER TABLE ... MERGE/SPLIT PARTITION.
- The codebase is huge and old (30+ years of git history), so it contains enormous numbers of bugs — what changed is that discovering them is now cheap and easy. Fixing them got easier too, but less dramatically.
- Commit stats: Apr 8–Sep 25 saw 1037 master-branch commits in 2025 vs 1443 in 2026; REL18STABLE had 724 vs REL19STABLE's 1169.
- Quoter rwitoff adds that AI weaponized by attackers drove record breaches this week, but AI also lets builders design and pentest everything with top-tier security models in seconds, for cents.
