Mustafa Suleyman clarifies: AI isn't conscious today and must stay that way
zetalyrae · x · 2026-11-02
Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman published "Don't build conscious superintelligence," pushing back on reactions to his model welfare essay. He says many misread his opening line "AIs are not conscious" — the present tense was deliberate: they aren't conscious today, "and that is how they must remain," not a claim they never could be. Quoted critic bayeslord argues nobody knows whether that's true and such assertions mark the speaker as unserious.
