Sakana AI held its symposium "From World Models to Real-World AI" in Tokyo on Oct 26 with 400+ attendees. Chief Scientific Advisor Jürgen Schmidhuber gave a keynote tracing world models and artificial curiosity to modern AI, then debated with CEO David Ha, co-author of the 2018 "World Models" paper. Jürgen argues generative AI has realized only about half of his AI vision — self-experimenting artificial scientists and real-world Physical AI remain unscaled, with opportunities beyond big labs. Chief scientist Takuya Akiba announced Sakana's in-house LLM series "Sawara" (provisional name); the first small model is planned for spring 2027 release.
