Alabama passes age-verification law 138-0 for all app downloads; Big Tech lobby sues
amplifiedamp · x · 2026-11-02
Alabama passed a law, 138 votes to zero, requiring every phone user in the state to verify their age before downloading any app — even a 45-year-old grabbing a news app must hand ID to Google first. Existing accounts get no exemption and must all be verified by October 2027. Teens need parental sign-off to install Wikipedia, Duolingo or even a Bible app, and kids without a parent to ask are locked out entirely. Apple, Google and Amazon's lobby group has sued to block the law on First Amendment grounds. The reposter added a clown-makeup meme mocking how the scope creeped from adult sites to "scan your face to check the weather."
